Visitors Comments on Venus and Adonis 2 by Paul Rubens

the date, 1636, is hypothetical, no? Like so many works by Rubens, dates are not inscribed on the picture by Rubens as are dates. Very very few have a genuine signature and dates are extremely rare.

has this canvas been trimmed. Why is Adonis's boar spear truncated?
The reproduction, though "sharp" is far too cool and the painterliness of the original is lost in this photo.
Provenance concerning this picture is not deep. Any new news concerning its past history?
Did Adonis make love to Venus before he went hunting? Does this aspect of their relationship have bearing on Rubens's portryal of the characters?

Consider the nudes of Baroque painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Venetian artist Titian: these women had abundant arms -- expanses of smooth, white flesh capable of jiggling in real life -- and belly pouches that yielded to the pull of gravity.
