Commissioned by Louis XII, Salvator Mundi represents the portrait of Christ depicted as the Saviour of the world, with the right hand elevated in a gesture of blessing, and the left holding an orb (initially with a cross on it, later erased by Da Vinci himself). Salvator Mundi is described by Vasari in his book the Lives of Painters, as a work of art painted with "valiant craftmanship".
The bright colors of the garb and of Christ's flesh give the portrait a most natural manner, with a level of detail almost depicting the pores of the skin, and deep texture of hair. Leonardo Da Vinci's style is seen also in the balance of the composition, having a pyramidal structure, such as that of the Mona Lisa.
