Madonna of the Carnation by Leonardo da Vinci, 1478-1480
|
Madonna of the Carnation is exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany. There is not yet an universal agreement between art historians whether this painting is 100% painted by Leonardo, but there are many elements pointing to his authorship: the tension between the first plane of the picture (the portrait) and the ethereal landscape seen through the arches in the background, as well as the details of the Virgin"s face and hair.
The use of chiaroscuro and the drapery elements are all specific to Leonardo da Vinci. It is believed to be his first integral painting. Note the way Madonna"s fold falls over her left arm, as if in a waterfall. The present texture of the painting is slightly degraded, as the colors of the portrait have taken a dull look over time.
Leonardo da Vinci authored other artworks, among which: "Madonna of the Rocks", dated 1505-1508 and located at Nat"l Gallery, London; - "Saint John the Baptist", completed in 1514 and displayed at Nat"l Gallery, London; - "The Virgin and the Child with St. Anne", finished in 1510 and located at Louvre, Paris; - "Leda and The Swan", dated 1515-1520, presently hosted at Wilton House, London
