The angel"s wings were considerably enlarged at a later date. This is regrettable, since it interferes with a proper view of the landscape. Nevertheless, the landscape is unquestionably Leonardo"s and we can perceive in it his growing sensitivity to a nature that is poetic and evocative. Atmosphere, moreover, now has a palpable physical existence in the form of mist, which helps to create the mood of dusk.

This is an important advance beyond the landscape he painted in the Baptism, where atmosphere was not yet a separate phenomenon from the forms it enveloped, but merely implied—an illusion Leonardo achieved by softening and blurring the surfaces of natural forms.
