"The Peasant Meal" is hosted at the Louvre, and was painted in 1642. The precise realism of the painter is doubled by an atmosphere of dignity contrasting with the poverty of the family. The three characters in the foreground have a sort of restrained humility that at the same time is solemn. In the second plane, the three children surround the scene with a subtle poetry. The colours are very somber, befitting the underlying bleak tone of the scene, saved maybe by the discolored red textures of the woman's garb and the spattered patches in the center and right side of the painting: the glass of wine, the cap and the child's red hair
