Also known as Young Woman with a Water Pitcher, this is an earlier Vermeer painting, executed between 1660 and 1662. Oil on canvas, currently hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. Iconic for Vermeer's bright interior scenes representing young women during common activities.
Young Woman with a Water Jug is similar in composition to The Milkmaid; here too we have the simple, clear picture of a young woman, but this time more delicate in expression and technique.
The artist has bestowed the same religious care on human figure and inanimate object. The personality of the young woman in the familiar jacket meant no more to him than the water jug and the jewel- casket on the table.
Both this picture and the Milkmaid may be dated about 1658, the former perhaps somewhat later, around 1660,to 1662.
