Considered to be the joint masterpiece of Hubert and Jan van Eyck, The Ghent Altarpiece is dated 1432 by inscription and is mounted on wood frames that were replaced at least a couple of times between 1432 and 1600. According to the initial inscription, both Van Eycks painted it, but Hubert was considered "first in art", whereas Jan was mentioned as "second in art".
