In the Banquet of Celopatra, Tiepolo created one of the most beautiful examples of pictorial illusionism ever painted, with the help of Mengozzi-Colonna for the perspective parts, Groups of secondary figures or glimpses of long perspectives can be seen between the imitation, painted columns.
The Banquet of Cleopatra leads the most famous cycle of frescoes painted by Tiepolo for a private palace.
The splendid Palazzo Labia was erected between 1720 and 1750, the facade towards S. Geremia being by the architect Tremignan and the one towards Canareggio by Andrea Cominelli.
The Banquet contaisn a remarkable self-portrait by Tiepolo; he is represented standing in profile near the Moor, looking at the spectator. The figure at his left is traditionally supposed to be his collaborator Mengozzi-Colonna.
The cycle used to be dated 1757 on the basis of a false date inscribed on the Banquet. A date of about 1745 was suggested on the grounds of some details in the construction of the palace itself. The style of the frescoes is close to the cycle in Villa Cordellina of 1743 and it may be assumed that Tiepolo began to work in the palacebetween 1745 and 1750.
Some small damages suffered during World War 2 have been repaired.
