Mentioned as an original Caravaggio in the inventory of the sale (1750) of the collection of Pio di Savoia. A variation of the Louvre painting, it does not conform to Bellori's description, as the left hand is not gloved.

Possibly it is the painting mentioned by Mancini (can the gypsy's gesture be interpreted as stealing a ring?). It is not necessarily an original, whereas the Louvre painting undoubtedly is. The features of the faces are blurred and the figures lack the square-shouldered firmness of the Louvre painting.

In older literature it is always considered a free copy, often attributed to Saracem. Recent critics have suggested that it is a late version of the Louvre painting by Caravaggio himself.
