Caravaggio

Painted commissioned by Caravaggio's patron Cardinal del Monte in 1597. Medusa was painted on a wooden shield that was gifted to Ferdinando de Medici. Typical of Caravaggio's interest in physiognomic expression, as in the later David with the Head of Goliath or Judith and Holofernes. Currently hosted at the Uffizi Museum, in Florence, Italy.
