In Caravaggio’s blood there is meaning

Something is hiding in Caravaggio’s blood.
Look closely, and you’ll find words.
In his “Beheading of St. John the Baptist,” the 17th-century Italian painter did more than depict an execution: he signed his name to one.

“Clever, inventive signatures in paintings are unusual in the Seicento, the 17th century, so one is immediately curious as to why Caravaggio signed his name in this unusual form,” said David M. Stone, a professor of art history at the University of Delaware and noted art historian, who will be lecturing on the significance of the signature in Caravaggio’s famed “The Beheading of John the Baptist.”
What may seem morbid, however, has a hint of playfulness.
