His red scarf has a special significance, probably belonging to his wife or rather a lady of high rank who has granted him her "merci".

I love this painting. It has a feel of mystery to it because the man in the painting seems full of thought. Even though he is facing the audience, his eyes seem to pass the viewer as if he is in deep thought. I would love to know who this man really is.
