McIntire Department Of Art
Since the summer days in 1912 when the young Georgia O'Keefe came to study drawing with Alon Bement, Studio Art classes have been part of the University of Virginia's liberal arts curriculum. Today, Studio Art at U.Va. is a rigorous undergraduate program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department teaches artistic skills and application in the following areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, new media, print making, film, installation and performance art. Courses acquaint the student with the concerns and issues of visual art through practical studio experience.
Art History (undergraduate)
The department provides its students with the skills and perspectives of the liberal arts; to think clearly, to write well, and to find, analyze, evaluate, and present facts and ideas. It also provides students with a broad, humanistic background, an advantageous resource among the disciplines of law, business, and medicine. Students often combine art history with a major in one of these respective areas. The major also soundly prepares students for graduate study. Professional careers in art history including teaching (most often at the college level), museum work, and work in the art market, usually require additional study at the graduate level leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. more
Studio Art (undergraduate)
The Art Department's studio major is designed to accommodate students with various interests and abilities. It serves students who expect to become professional artists as well as welcoming those who plan to pursue careers in fields requiring creative, spatial and design abilities. Many Studio Art majors also go on to pursue graduate studies at leading institutions around the country. more
History of Art and Architecture (graduate)
Joining the faculties and resources of two strong departments, the Graduate Program in the History of Art and Architecture replaces the Ph.D. programs in Art History and Architectural History at the University of Virginia. Over 23 faculty teach in diverse fields with particularly strong concentrations in Ancient, Renaissance, Modern, American, and Asian art and architecture. Our large faculty enables us to offer both a wide range of graduate courses and a faculty/student ratio that encourages close faculty mentoring of each student in the program. more
