Rembrandt (1606-1669)
Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn was an illustrious painter of the Dutch school, born at Leyde and dead at Amsterdam (1606-1669). He was the leader of the reaction against the Italian influence in the Netherlands. By this reaction, the Dutch artists affirmed the values of nature against the classical pomposity of the composition, against the traditional purity of lines, the theatrical nobility of attitudes and the cold sobriety of colors.
Rembrandt is without any doubt the master of chiaroscurro effects, of powerful painting, showing absolute mastery of color. He was the first to show the resources of color, in depicting carnation effects, the fine harmony of ensembles, the vigor of shadows, and the brightness of light. His immense body of work consists of around 350 paintings, and almost as many acuarels, portraits, biblical subjects, landscapes.
Among his masterpieces, The Return of the Prodigal Son, Danae, Batsheba at her bath The Night Watch, The Syndics, The Anatomy Lesson.
