Lorenzo The Elder Costa (1460-1535)

Lorenzo Costa, nicknamed The Elder, was an illustrious Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, and who was born at Ferrara around 1460, and died in 1535 in Mantua.

Belonging in style to the Bolognese school of Arts, Lorenzo Costa was also the founder of the Ferrara school. One of his better known works is the full decoration of the Rossi Chapel at Bologna.

Of Costa's remarkable paintings we mention: the altarpiece "Madonna and Saints" (1492, San Petronio, Bologna), "The Court of Isabella dEste" (1506, the Louvre, Paris), "The Nativity" (Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lyon), and "The Triumph of Death" (1490, San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna).
