Jacopo Bellini (1400-1470)

Jacopo Bellini (born in 1400 in Venice and died in 1470) is an Italian painter of the 15th century. He is the father of a dynasty of artists, including names like Giovanni Bellini and Gentile Bellini.

His manner of representing the Holy Virgin with sober expression and in somptuous rich colors retain something from the Byzantine tradition, still present in Venice during the first half of the 15th century. Other paintings by him feature the Gothic style, as well as the influence of Gentile da Fabriano, the artist who was employed to decorate the Doge Palace.

Nevertheless, Jacopo worked on many large format paintings that were lost. The Renaissance spirit, which Jacopo discovered in many Florentine artists, is visible in his paintings through well thought construction, through the employment of noble architecture and through the presence of familiar landscapes and details typical to the Venetian School. Jacopo Bellini's sketch books were equally famous, being deemed themselves true masterpieces.

Among his well known paintings:

"The Madonna of Humility adorated by a prince of the House of Este"
"Madonna and Child Blessing"
"Madonna and Cherub"
"St John the Baptist"
"St John The Baptist Praying"
