Hans Memling (1440-1494)
In his lifetime, Hans Memling was a very popular painter from Bruges to Italy, Germany, and even England. However, after his death he was forgotten for many centuries. He was rediscovered at the beginning of the Nineteenth century by German artlovers, among which the most notable was Schlegel.
A great success with the people, but underestimated by art historians, Hans Memling has his place among the Primitive Flemish painters. Owing to Rogier Van der Weyden, he created paintings characterized by simplicity and refinement at the same time. His religious scenes are filled with a suave and serene atmosphere.
Two of his most authentic works are: "The Holy Virgin with Saints", and "The Adoration of the Magi", both preserved at the Saint Jean hospital in Bruges, Belgium.
