Antonello Da Messina (1430-1479)

Antonello da Messina, was Italian painter who was born and died in Messina (1430-1479). An Early Renaissance artist, Antonello worked in Milan and Venice, and was one of the masters who promoted the oil painting technique throughout Italy.

Antonello produced a number of religious paintings as well as portraits. Among the most representative we include: "Il Condottiere" (1475, preserved at The Louvre), the serene "St Sebastian" (1477, Gemaldegalerie, Dresden), and the almost minimalist "Crucifixion" (1475, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp).
